PMT have come up with an amazing new tyre. We now have to rip up the
rule book on how we view tyres so no shore rating, no different compounds and
all that stuff. This tyre is just one compound and it is adjusted with
polymer additives to control the temperature range it runs at. It took
me a few days at the Euros to fully understand what this tyre does, is capable
of and how we now view it.
PMT told us to put the lower temperature one on the front and the higher
temperature one on the back. At the moment there are just three versions
of this tyre which for references sake we can call low, medium and high
temperature or up to 80 degrees, up to 105 degrees and up to 120 degrees.
You get grip at the first corner so no need to warm up the tyres first.
We gave one pair of tyres to three drivers (not three pairs to three drivers)
at the Euros and at the last count that pair of tyres did seven heats and is
about half worn so the wear rate is fantastic as well. To be honest PMT
did not expect these tyres to be so good but when you consider that they went
through most of the tyres they brought with queues of drivers demanding them
and in the main final eight cars of the ten were shod with this tyre and the
fastest car on the track had them on, you can come to realise we have
something special here. In fact looking at the tyres after that 30
minute final I was amazed at how little they had worn. They also get
hot, very hot, almost too hot to touch and yet never loose grip. As I
said they are amazing tyres.
PMT have a lot more work to do to that there are more variants of the
rubber. They also have to find a name for them and decide on a tread
pattern but this will be done before the World Championships in
September. We brought back a limited number of them prior to the main
production. We can offer some of these tyres
to drivers but this is on a strictly first-come basis. Once they are
sold out we will then have to take forward orders for delivery in September.
During the Euro Racing Season PMT came out with an 005
rubber for the rear of the F1 cars. This is another amazing rubber
that defies the normal rules of how we view tyres. On the Formula cars
it got them going up to 2 seconds a lap faster than the Touring Cars. I
got PMT to make some up in Kronos and these were amazing. I reasoned
that if a slick they would be even better and so they have proved. This
is a tyre for now and the Winter months
when you want grip. I have limited numbers so again this is a first-come
basis for the moment with one set of compounds per order. This will be a direct replacement for the 010
Also in our inventory is the new rain tyre from PMT. Sticky in
your hand it comes as soft, medium and hard versions in the Goodyear Eagle F1
tread pattern. Again limited numbers till September so go to the Products
pages for these tyres. |
